Parents:
What's the difference between the college grad who lands a job right NOW and
the college grad who's still looking for a job and will be financially dependent on you for the next 6, 9 or even 12 months?
If you guessed...
You would be wrong.
You thought this was the year you could take your kid off the payroll.
You were excited about their future and all of the job offers they expected would come their way... and the financial freedom it provided both of you.
But then... the pandemic hit.
And suddenly, your kid has moved back home 3 months before graduation, and you're dealing with a house full of kids, and laundry, and meals, and fighting over WiFi, and late nights of asking them to keep the noise down.
Take a breath.
We Can Help.
Even in times of no crisis, there is a disconnect between what grads think an employer wants and what an employer is actually looking for.
Some grads might think this crisis is the reason they can't or won't get a job. And sure, it's added stress and overwhelm. But employers are still hiring. So before they send an application or resume, your grad must know what an employer wants.
Most college students and grads say "I don't have a lot of skills".
Which isn't true. And then they try to wing it. So when and if the DO get an interview, they really don't know what to say. Being a hard worker or trustworthy are things everyone says. Your grad needs to find a way to differentiate themselves by getting clear on what their skills are.
Self doubt can sabotage the entire search process.
If your grad runs into rejection or resistance, they risk believing they are not good enough. Which leads to believing he/she's not qualified...and self sabotaging by not bothering to apply for jobs or make further effort. But they ARE good enough and DO have skills employers want. They just need to know how to communicate their skills effectively with a concise story of how they add VALUE to an employer.
Let's face it.
As a parent, you have done the work of raising a really great kid and you deserve to see them get the job they want.
You deserve to have the financial freedom to plan for your own future, not theirs.
You deserve to have one less thing to worry about in terms of your student's job prospects
"Let's wait and see how this plays out" shouldn't be your default right now.
The worry and overwhelm should be replaced by an awesome job offer and a U-Haul.
Unless your grad knows how to communicate their qualifications and their worth to an employer...
...the diploma they worked so hard for will, at best, put them 6 months behind...
...and at worst, it will put them a year or more behind when they figure out (too late) that their dream job was given to someone else.
Even though the prospects may not look bright for your grad right now, they've got to keep the hope alive.
But how does your grad convey the skills that their ideal employer is looking for?
CEOs USED TO ASK ME A SIMILAR QUESTION.
But they wanted to know how to sell in highly competitive markets. And they paid me well because I showed them the strategy for winning more business.
Then 5 years ago, I realized college graduates could apply the same method for getting a job. So I started coaching grads to gain the same insight as I was teaching those professional executives.
The same technique applies to young job seekers... except they are selling themselves. And they need to focus on the companies and employers they want to bring their skills to.
Most importantly, your college grad needs to know how to compete and to understand what executives are expecting of them.
HI, I'M BETH HENDLER-GRUNT.
I'm the CEO and Founder of Next Great Step and mother of two boys who are in college and high school, so I get it.
When I’m not getting outside going for long walks or spending time with my family at sporting events, I’m helping college students and grads land internships and full time jobs in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
Having helped hundreds of grads land the job they want, I’ve observed that an overwhelming majority of students graduate with NO idea how to talk about themselves AND do not understand what an employer is expecting of them. Which is why we created the Skills Accelerator Method™ to help students gain confidence and clarity in their job search.
That way, they’re better positioned to land the job they want with the employer they want — not one they have to settle for.
